on that year model subaru, they had a problem with the oil pump leaking and losing pressure.
I would drop oil pan and inspect.
Depending on how long you've drove it like this, will determan on the extent of damage done to the engine.
My advice, check rod and main bearings while your in there. If no evidence of heavy wear on bearings, replace oil pump and see if noise goes away.

It could be a crankshaft bearing. I had a 91 Buick that did the same thing. It knocked at low speeds or revs and quit knocking a med. speeds and then started knocking at about 45 mph. Had to have the lower end rebuilt.

Have it inspected by a certified mechanic to make sure there are no hidden problems with it and if it is OK offer them $500-$1000 less than asking. All they can say is no and then you can pay full price if you want to. Good Luck

Probably bearings in the lower end. Main bearings and rod bearings should do the trick.

I would try a different type of gas take a look in your owners manul and see what otane rating they recomend cause that can make a difference
