Singapore is a very prosperous country in Asia. The government there, takes pains to describe its' contribution to this.
However, one must not forget, Singapore is above all, a city state. We see many great cities today, who expand and grow by leaps and bounds. Shanghai, Tokyo, Sydney, even Kuala Lumpur, have all become very modern and efficient cities.
Because of Singapore's unique position as a State, it can pass laws and encourage trade and commerce, whilst getting its' people to move forward. Other major cities are handicapped by the fact, that they are only part of a larger country, anything they do must in sync with the country as a whole.
The position of Sinagpore as an ideal stop as a port, not to mention air traffic, makes the island a vital cog, in world trade and the movement of peoples from Asia to the West and vice-versa.
It enjoys racial harmony, remains a very safe city to visit, people can drink water straight from the tap and have almost all the amenities and effects of modernisation.
But while it is a good place to work, it remains a tough place for the average citizen, owing to high prices, government control (which can be both good and bad) and the need to stay competitive.
I think above all, Singpore still lacks a soul and a deep sense of character. But as it moves ahead, it is slowly coming to terms in positioning its' destiny and flavour in the world.
I would rank Singapore 7th in the world as a city, but somewhere in the mid 50s as a country.
My major cities are
1. Paris
2. Rome
3. London
4. New York
5. Tokyo
6. Sydney
7. Singapore.
8. Shanghai
9. Berlin (after a unified Germany, 17 years old)
10. Seoul

Although Singapore is small, just a red dot on the world map, but we dare to dream big, make big and talk big. All our proposed projects are world class not less than that. Whether the airport, sea port, up and coming "IR" or the university, hospital ;etc. For your info.
