The extent of intervention should never be obvious. But it is quite clear that politicians scurry into hiding when the Church states an opinion. Politicians are also at fault since they solicit support from the Church or any popular religious groups in their country. The separation of Church and State is a must. It should be followed. Until the Church can function like a government and until the government can preach honestly on morals, there should not be any intervention at all from both sides.

If "the church" is the recognized voice of a particular denomination (Catholic, Protestant, whatever), then they are acting as a societal conscience by speaking out on the actions of their government. That is one of their functions: to bring compassion and heart to the rule of law.

If "the church" is simply any believer belonging to any particular religious group, then by being involved in governmental actions, whether as activist, commentary, or voter, then they are being good citizens. Strong religious convictions often produce good moral character, which will produce law-abiding citizens, which make good political activits, which help make good government.

They shouldn't! Religion and government need to stay the hell away from eachother... Religion is the reason there are so many problems/wars today.
