The Government of India has taken several steps for eradication of untouchability. There is reservation in Govt jobs and in educational institutions. Practicising untouchability is a punishable offence. As Gandhi said, untouchability is a crime against god and man. In certain remote areas untouchability is still being practised. This is because of lack of awareness both among the opressor and the opressed. Social and economic upliftment would help in eradication of untouchability. Casteism cannot be completely eradicated. It is apart of our cultural heritage and hopefully atleast the present generation learns to live harmoniously despite the difference in culture, facilities available etc.

Actually speaking no human being is "untouchable" as every one is equal and has equal rights.

People make others untouchables. Religiously speaking, there are still untouchables present in India and the orthodox high caste Hindus still dont like to interact with them. Modern and educated Hindus, on the other hand, dont care much about such classifications and dont mind who is who.

Yep down in the country side. India has gone through major social transformation in the past 50 years, but still thier is a division based on caste. It is viewed that southern Indian villages have eleminated this by far and large, the north side this practice still continues.
However the city washes away all such division. Only thier are poor and rich in the city

its unfortunate but the answer is yes.
until and unless untouchability exits from mind level it wil always remain in existence.
position has increased a lot but we have to go a long long way in the areas which are too far and unreachable.
untouchability is not the only problem.
one should give the weaker sections same respect and equal standing then only this curse will end.
