Nice Question!
But as you may already know, it is different on situations and persons.
if you find the person aristocrat use a request!
if he see every thing economical use money!
if he is too religious give him/her God's bless!
if he is a nasty gangster put a knife beneath his/her throat!

Well, that's the trick, isn't it?

Forms of control are prone to eventual failure. A particular method only works on certain people in certain situations. Some people can be threatened into submission, others can be "bought," others do not respond to any sort of threat or bargain and have to be given more autonomy.

In general, control is a lesser form of interaction between people. Society uses it just to keep the social peace, only because there are those who would abuse others if they had the option and only respond to having power used against them. So it's effective for justice, but not for advancing relationships.

Ultimately the best form of 'control' is not control at all, but relationship/love.... where people WANT to do the right thing and respect/care for others by choice.

To get to that point, though, sometimes the other measures have to be used just in order to get people's attention, keep them from going down the wrong path, give them incentitive to try doing something nice for others (and experiencing the positive results), and so forth.

They're rather like a ladder you can use to ascend to the next level, whereupon you can throw the ladder away because you no longer need it.

4th one. As the media and all the religious preachers doing it world over. Its a proven and trusted method.

First 3 method may work for a limited time but human nature is such that when they come to know that you have been passimistic (1st example), trading (2nd example), and/ or blackmailing (3rd example) them, they will react to it in opposition.

The best is to inculcate some benifits of a thing in their mind, make them believe that doing a particular thing is in their own benifit and they will do it with out any post work reaction.

You have missed one, and that's the one which I think works best: "You really are the kind of person who is very capable of... x. If you try this, you will discover a new self". Call it a message of salvation - everybody gags for it. They all want to be found. If you pull off the great philanthropist/ admirer, they're in your bag.

you forgot one:
"You don't want to do that..." -- Reverse Psychology

I personally favor the direct approach of a polite request, being that I hate when people try to manipulate me; and therefore, I'm not comfortable with the idea of manipulating others. However, as the single mother of a teenaged son, I wish I were more effective at manipulating him...

Stress on what they have to gain if they do something. If they don't have anything to gain they will not do it.
