okay, theres not much of a difference but heres some of the minor changes
1. Theres a brighter backlight(woo-hoo)
2. The bottom and top pieces are the same size (in the original, the bottom piece was larger and it kinda looked weird) so its completely rectangular
3. The power switch is different, in the original you turn the power on with a button, on the lite, you push a switch up to turn on the power.
4. it weighs less and is a lot better looking.....

As far as i know thats about it

My brother bought one that I played with for a bit since I have my own regular DS. If you already have one I doubt it's worth running out to buy the new one. But the DS Lite is more convinient. Smaller, Lighter, has been light settings (can go dark and lighter with a huge difference between the both), the slot for the GB games is hidden so it's not this huge gaping hole, and the power button is on the side as a switch instead of next to the start button as a button. This means less chance of hitting the blasted thing accidently. It's a better design but not such a huge difference that you need to run out and buy it as compared to the other.
