Oedipus Syndrome is when a son has passionate loving feelings about his mother/stepmum. It comes from a very early example of Greek Theatre (Dyonisus) called 'Oedipus Rex'. The name 'Oedipus' means 'holes in the feet' .In the story a Greek king is told that his baby son will overthrow him and take his throne. The king has the baby boy left on a mountain side with holes pierced in his ankles so that he cannot crawl away. Years late the King is over thrown by a warrior (who un beknown to both of them. ) is his grown up son. The son falls in love with the older queen Jocasta (his mother) and marries her. Towards the end of the play Oedipus is told the truth about his life by a blind man ergo he discovers that Jocasta is his mum. Oedipus then gores his own eyes out in a mixture admiration for the blind man.

You can thank Sigmund Freud for introducing that name. Personally, I think while most of what he propounded was accurate, we cannot take anything he wrote down as gospel truth, because most of his views were influenced by his era (read: negative views on the fairer sex), hence the infamous question: 'What does a woman want?'
Oedipus Syndrome is based from the Greek mythology of Oedipus, who unwittingly killed his father and married his own mother. Freud meanwhile played down the whole kill-the-father-marry-the-mom by saying that boys want to marry girls who look or at least behave like their mothers. That's the gist of it. You can check for more connection between the myth and the syndrome online at the link below.

Oedipus complex is a desire for exclusive love from mother by a son. Male equivalent of Electra complex. May also involve hatred of father and siblings out of jealousy

I assume you know what it is... Sigmund Freud's twisted theory about guys fancying their mothers and hating their fathers because they have to compete with them for the mum's attention. A load of rubbish if you ask me.
Refer to any psychology textbook. I think the one I used back in college was by a guy called Weiten or something like that.
