I dont think the standard for gay teen dating should be any different then heterosexual teens... people bring up violence...
what else is new... there are teen heterosexual guys killing other teen heterosexual guys over girls.... bottom line is there is always gonna be a reason teens choose to act in violence against their peers... attempting to discourage gay teens from dating in highschool is only going to cause more damage in the long run.. it will cause a delay in certain critical areas of social developement that take place in teen years when dating is taking place. Not to mention gay teens who are restricted from dating will likely end up suffering from even further isolation... the young people in this community have it hard enough as it is... its hard enough for most of them to connect and relate with peers already... You restrict a gay teens dating and well thats yet another thing they are in the dark about.... it may be true their dating experiences may not be the same.... but its not who you date thats important in further developing socializing skills needed to be able to surive in adulthood.. but instead its the act of finding the person to date.. and actually going on the date communicating with the person... learning from the experience ect...

I honestly think thats a bad bad idea...

If you'd asked the question should gay teens be discouraged form dating in highschool? it would have put a different spin on it. As it is people can only answer "No" even if they actually disagree with what they are saying as there are other issues within a high school environment (study, acceptance, potential violence etc.) all of which have been pointed out above that need to be factored into the answer.

HOWEVER, if two people have already bonded and formed a relationship in highschool then they should be treated no different from their hetrosexual counterparts. That's the real message that everyone needs to read here.

Cheers
:-)

Dating should be a normal part of any teen's life. I don't think it has to be encouraged, it just happens. Gay teens should be made to feel comfortable to date who they choose. Being gay should not mean having to fight for the same privileges and rights other teens take for granted. I look forward to seeing this become a non-issue.

HOnestly, I don't think any teens should necessarily be "encouraged" to date. But no one should be discouraged either. It's not a gay issue; it's an age issue.

Everyone should be encouraged to date in high school. Or should they be disbarred from learning about creating and maintaining non-platonic relationships? What is school for if not to provide a safe environment where the student can learn? Yes, they might be harassed by others... two things though:

They'll likely be harassed in life, anyway

The harassers need exposure to GLBTQs, so as to educate them that we are human too and in no way damage the straight world.

They shouldn't be discouraged from dating. But they should use their heads as to the environment in which they are living as to whether it is wise for two guys to go to the prom together in any given high school. Some communities are more ready for change than others.

Teens should not be encouraged to do anything.

No. Mainly because dating can be distracting. High school students should focus on their studies. There's plenty of time to date after school. Also, gay students openly dating same-sex partners in high school may be seen as provocative behaviour in less tolerant environments and may lead to harrassment or violence.

dating in high school is a bad idea for anyone. The relationships dont last and they mean nothing. So dont waste your time.
