This was in the news yesterday and the answer is they don't know. They have found that mice are born with a higher rate of brain abnormalities if they have ultrasound examinations. They are now going to test with monkeys as their brains and skulls are more simalar to a human brain.

For now my opinion is that ultrasound detects and therefore allows prevention of many defects and I would still have one. But each to their own. :)

Few recent studies conducted have found out that ultrasound is harmful for the brain of foetus.

all ultrasound is is the use of sound to form a picture. So when the instrument is passed over the stomach of the woman soundwaves are produced (we can't hear them because they are above our frequency levels) these then hit the baby all over (hit as in the waves do not penetrate the baby not as in smack lol) slowly the computer forms a picture from the points at which the waves were stopped ie where the baby was hit and thus a picture is formed. It is impossible for the baby to be harmed by this because it is mearly sound if sound hurt us where would we be?

No, its perfectly harmless. To date there has been no recorded harm to any foetus that has had ultrasounds done...it can't even hear the sound waves!

not to my knowledge, before it is done or the appointment it is good to ask questions and let the technician explain the procedure, for peace of mind
