I'd say the opposite holds true. Polygamy is definitely discouraged, to the point it's illegal.
Though I must admit I love the HBO show "Big Love," which is about polygamists.

In general it is highly frowned upon, and it's actually illegal. I personally think that as long as all parties concerned agree on it, that it should be legal. But to directly answer your question, no American society does not accept polygamy.

I'd say it's discouraged: if you watch movies and TV, it all tells you stories how cheater will be loosers. So based on that, I'd say it is discouraged. Those who go to church also get discouraged there.
If it was truly encouraged, then it would be widely accepted as a norm, and it isn't.

No it is not encouraged in general, not at all. there may be small areas where it is practised, such with some the Mormon people in Utah. i think it is actually illegal most places, which doesnt mean some people dont do it anyway, they are just very discreet

Discouraged by American society, and looked at as sexual sin by Christianity.
