Curious, I think I will do it. From the great things I have heard about it. But I also heard it was expensive?

You can find some good info here. I'm not sure about the specifics, but I've also heard it's pricey.

Donating it is free. If you want to BANK your cord blood, meaning it's only stored for use by you or your family, costs a lot of money.

I donated mine so it could help someone. Plus, if a family member ever needs it for a disease, it's not horribly difficult to get, because so many people donate it.

It's not a difficult process. They come in prior to giving birth, and have you sign a consent form. Then once the baby is born, after they get him taken care of, and you're taken care of, a nurse, or someone else, will come and collect the cord blood. Basically they take the umbilical cord and squeeze all the remaining blood from it into a cylinder. But you won't even see this because you'll still be in your bed, getting tended to by the nurses, and this happens on the other side of the room. (My husband basically told me what they did)

Keep in mind that some doctors or hospitals might charge you to collect the cord blood. I'd ask to make sure. We privately banked and the bank covered the costs but otherwise if you want to donate it, you'd have to pay it.

Donating is free, but storing it for your own use is expensive.
