What would be the simplest analogy of that doctrine? Use your own words to give the gist of it. I don't want any 'cut and paste' spam...

The analogical gist is that it's atomistic animism.

Primitive peoples believed that natural objects all had selves in them just like people. That belief is called animism.

Leibniz's monadology takes animism to the atomic level. It's the theory that the world is made of atoms called monads. Each monad is more or less a self. The monads that make up the human brain are a very high grade of monad - second only to the monads of which God is composed.

Each monad is unique, but each 'mirrors' all the others - the theory starts to get a bit odd (odder) here. Monads are 'windowless' - nothing passes in nor out of one, yet each reacts to all the others so that they exibit systemic behavior. There is nothing between them, yet they are related, each to all.

Weird stuff, I always thought, but imaginative. And the guy was a legitimate genius - he discovered the calculus independently of Newton, and it's his notation we use now for the calculus, not Newton's.

Sorry- I gave up Leibnbix back in '04- been off his monadology now for 19 months. Started a 12 step program, if you're interested. The first step is admitting you have a problem- and it's the little admissions that matter most- like, you're up at 2 am, typing information and questions about Leibniz. Da#@! I'm still doing it. Better call my sponsor.

At that time, atoms were thought to be the smallest unit that physical stuff is made of. Leibniz's monads were, in his theory, the smallest units that non-physical stuff is made of -- thoughts, minds, souls. They are to the metaphysical what atoms are to the physical.
