Hard to beat my Winchester Model 12 Pump . Two loads of birdshot to say hello, 3 Lightfield Sabot Slugs to say goodbye.

It depends,... did you mean it as a safety concern? Because there are inividuals who keep a gun for show, and the only time they actually fire the thing is one of these days when they accidentally shoot them selves in the foot acting like a dimwit or a moron (I prefer spelling it w/ 2 R's) in front of friends.

Or accidentally shooting their friends, their kids, their friend's kids (though sometimes it may not of been an accident),...or worse yet accidentally shooting your dog or cat. Now if you just barely miss your spouse, take cover chances are your spouse has a gun in the house too - right?

Anyway, most long barrel firearms are no good in close quatrers, even if you have to fire a gun to protect your family, home & property. It doesn't matter what caliber as long as you can shoot it straight with enough accuracy.

In the dark or in dim light, and intruder is only concerned that the thing in your hands looks like a threat, he doesn't know what the caliber is because his only concern is not to get filled with holes.
For all he knows, you could beholding a flare gun with Double O buck in the chamber,... (best way to break your own wrist too). Or it could even just be a banana.

A small caliber pistola is just fine, besides - if you happen to accidentally shoot your pecker off, coz you were half asleep and you thought kitty was a burgler. Just how are you gonna explain it to the police or to your friends IF you had been using a Large Caliber gun? A small caliber means the doctor can still re-attach what is still left, at least patch the hole that you made.

According to the retired cop sitting next to me:
The .45 ACP loaded with 230 gr HydraShok ammo
-has the best stopping power (OSS)
-has less muzzle flash than the .357 (night-blindness!)
-has less recoil than the .357 (easier to handle)
-carries more ammo (auto vs revolver)
(I personally use the .357, but that's because I don't have a .45! :)

i wouldnt buy the 45acp if i already had a 357 for home defense weapon. just get some 180 gr bullets and use a slightly reduced loading to sloww the bullet down a little. you want the bullet to go in and expand not go right through.

WHAT? It doesn't matter as long as the gun is locked up and the bullets in another place. Accidents happen, please take precautions. We have lots of guns and they are in a locked safe and the bullets are in a totally different place, we have kiddos..
My husband uses a 45 for our home protection and in the mountains for the bears that seem to want to hibernate in our pickups....haven't shot one yet, but have wanted to a few times..they are worse than a home invader.....

i think either one is a great home protection gun. i've also heard great things about 9 and 10 millimeter. but if it shoots, and it goes straight, it's gonna hurt either way...
