That is NOT a windows security center alert. The real Windows Security Center will not invite or suggest you download any programs. It might warn you to turn on Windows Firewall, if it's not (if you have another firewall program, you don't need both), and/or warn you your antivirus isn't loaded or not up to date. It will never suggest a program to install. What you describe is a scam window to convince you to load the program, which is likely actually malware in itself. If you're not using a pop-up blocker and antispy programs already, you should install either Yahoo or Google toolbar (both if you really want), and if you're on XP SP2, make sure that pop-up blocker is active. If you keep getting the window, you're already infected, though probably not too seriously. At minimum download the free Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D and run scans (if you get Spybot, use the advanced mode and install Tea Timer, which is resident protection). Make sure to keep your programs updated at all times.
If the problem persists, it's already made its way into your registry. I'd suggest going to spywarewarrior.com, and going into the forums area. there's a specific area for HijackThis logs, which is a program that scans your registry and can help identify items that don't belong there. There are very helpful people there who can walk you through in detail how to purge things like this from the registry. It might take a bit of time, but it should work.

You'll need to 'hack' the registry to disable the alert. I would highly recommend that you backup your registry before performing the changes below. Secondly if you are uncomfortable editing your registry, you might want to ask the help of someone more experienced.

Also the alert you get regarding the antispyware is bogus. I would recommend you install a spyware/malware scanner such as Sypybot S&D. It is well supported and is free - www.safer-networking.org

> Select 'Start'
> Select 'Run' and type the command regedit and depress the enter key on your keyboard
> Open Registry Editor and navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Security Center

> Backup the key by exporting this to a REG file. See here for more information
> In the right-pane, set AntiVirusDisableNotify (REG_DWORD) and set to 1
> Similarly, set FirewallDisableNotify (REG_DWORD) and set to 1
> Close Registry Editor and restart Windows.

It is really a virus. It alerts people who don't have much knowledge about computer. Then it asks you to download its anti virus like spyware etc on trial and after trial expires it ask you to be registered this is the new way to getting money. If you have installled any Mcafee or Norton or any other antivirus you need not to take any action. Even you do not have anti virus installed you must not insall this one. Cause this one is fake anti virus. If any anti virus give your its security center warning. Like Mcafee security center you must deactivate it by opening its security center and clicking on virus scan then virus scan options. Thank you

go to the control panel, then security center, then on the left side you can see (change the way security center alerts me) and then disable them all to stop all the alerts

Sounds like Spyware....download spybot search and destroy, update the database signature, scan, remove spyware/malware/etc, reboot.
