Okay, so a woman left a message on my machine, wanting toset up an over-the-phone interview, left her first name and a phone number, yet, apparently, forgot to leave the name of the business.
I don't want to go into an interview completely unprepared, without a clue as to whom I am talking to.

I don't recognize the number, can't find the area code in the phone book.

So, how do I find out where this phone number connects to?

Suggestions please?

If you do not recall leaving your telephone number with any specific company or business that was seeking people to fill a position or to apply for some service requiring an interview, then you should wait until she calls again and ask her, directly, if it is a long distance or unknown area code. If she does not call back, she could have had the wrong number or it could have been some sort of telephone scam.
If curiosity is getting the best of you, you could ask directory assistance where the area code is located. I Do not advise you to call it from your home phone because it might incur very high toll charges.

There is currently a very large scam going around from the Philipines call center - if you call the number you will be charged well into the $1000 of dollars depending on how long they can hold you on the line - this has been reported to FCC and they best they can say is if you don't recognize the caller or number, then don't make the call. This is not a prank response, I have read several articles online over the past two weeks regarding two call centers that are doing this - one of the area codes begins with a 9 but I can't recall the other one, maybe a 4 - but, the FCC says they will not take any class action suits as the calls, even though a scam, are legitimate numbers - they usually deal with job interviews, travel arrangments, billing of some type - particularly about a credit card - they are getting their information from having hacked a travel net service and until the FCC and various others can track it all down, we have been warned to not return any calls that do not leave familiar or known information as the calls begin at $999 a minute! Archive some of the last couple of weeks headlines about scam phone calls.

Call back the number. If unable to get a response, jot the number down and call the phone company to ask about the details of the number.

Call the number back. If they are closed they should have an answering machine or service that states the name and hours of the business. Otherwise the secretary or whomever answers will state the name of the business.

call the number - they usually say company name in the greeting.
Or have another person talk to them for more info. (use another phone tho)
or just dial 411
