We all face a variety of hair problems: dandruff, balding, brittle and graying hair to name just a few.
Though most are signs of the natural aging process or of basic genetic predisposition's. Various simple measures can contribute to a healthier head of hair.
Hair is a non living tissue, made up mainly of a fibrous protein called keratin the same material found in your fingernails. The health of your hair requires a plentiful supply of nutrient rich blood to nourish the hair follicles in the scalp, from which new hair sprouts.
On average, hair grows about one centimeter a month. It's not unusual for people to shed up to a hundred hairs a day -- fortunately, when one falls out , another usually grows in. Problems can arise when hair becomes dry or brittle, stops growing back or becomes flecked whit dandruff caused by excess flaking and shedding of skin on the scalp.
What causes it?
Stress, a poor diet and hormonal changes (such as those accompanying pregnancy) can all contribute to hair loss. Some hair conditions may also be caused by nutritional deficiencies, environmental circumstances, an under active thyroid gland, immune disorders or genetic factors.
How supplements can help:
The recommended supplements, which can be taken together, may help your hair grow stronger and healthier by nourishing it at the root. Though nothing can guarantee a luxurious head of hair, you may notice improvement within six months, when new hair has had time to grow in.
Supplements containing essential fatty acids, such as flaxseed oil and evening primrose oil, provide various benefits. Flaxseed oil is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids without them, hair is often dry and lifeless, ("FORGIVE ME I KNOW I SOUND LIKE A COMMERCIAL") Flaxseed oil may also cut down on itching and flaking dandruff, and may be useful for treating eczema and psoriasis, Evening primrose oil moisturizes the hair and the scalp as well.
My supplement recommendations:
Zinc/ Copper 30 mg and 2 mg copper a day.
Biotin 100 mcg (micrograms) a day
Vitamin B complex one pill twice a day with food.
Selenium 200 mcg twice a day
The hair is very sensitive to vitamin or mineral imbalances in the body. Lack of vitamin A for example, can result in a flaky scale, but too much vitamin A (more than 100,000 IU (International Units) a day) over a long period can cause hair loss. Call our doctor if you notice excessive hair loss after taking any supplements.
Supplements can be safely used along with prescription drugs such as: minoxidil, which helps to restore hair in some people.
Thinning hair maybe a sign that your gastrointestinal track is not absorbing zinc and other nutrients properly. Taking acidophilus may improve GI function and boost your body's ability to absorb important hair nourishing substances from the foods you eat.
I hoped this helps, if not get back to me, and I'll see what else I can do to help you.

I read an article about this in the New scientist - No-one really knows why the hair on our head has such a long growth cycle. There are some great evolutionary theories though - You can just imagine Early man with long flowing locks getting all the ladies and passing on his freaky hair genes!
