the biggest problem with most electronic, believe it or not, is dust. When you give it a quick knock your removing, or just moving, the dust. Your also risking damaging the connections and solder joints. Go buy a can of compressed air and use that instead. I've fixed a lot of "dead " electronics with a quick blast of air.

If there is a weak connection it will sometimes knock it back where it is supposed to be.

Perhaps you just beat the poor thing into obedience... lol
but seriously, its probably because of loose connections
or maybe banging it just restarts it, i have no idea
but do it enough times and it will die
