I don't believe that it has affected our society as much as our society has contributed to early maturation in adolescents.
On the one hand, I agree that its not a good thing that our culture is what it is and has to be reacted to and lived in by people with mature bodies and immature minds. I think it has brought up a higher number of certain problems that weren't as numerous before.
It is said that cats that are born and live outdoors in the wild reach maturity earlier than cats with homes. I assume that must be because stress and lack of security probably get "stress hormones" going, which either amounts to or leads to increased testosterone (maybe?) and triggers an earlier maturity. I assume it could be Nature's way of making young ones grow up faster to be able to take care of themselves when under stress.
I believe that today's society overestimates the emotional maturity of young people and underestimates the intellectual maturity of them, and as a result there are many, many young people who feel out-of-sync with what is expected of them by their peers, their families, and the world in general. Dumping too much "grown-up-ness" on people who aren't ready for it (which is what our society does to our children) puts them under stress because they can either go along and do something they may not feel right about or else be stressed out by the fact that they are different from their peers by refusing to go along.
Factor in stress from coming from a severely impoverished background, stress that could be associated with wealthy-but-emotionally-inadequate backgrounds, abusive situations, and whatever other family situations exist in today's world; and it seems to me there could be overwhelming influences in the direction of young people's not feeling secure, safe, and generally protected.
There is more to my "theory" (if, indeed, I can call it "mine"), but that's it in a nutshell. I think society has affected the number of children who mature earlier than they should - not necessarily the other way around.

It's not any earlier than it used to be. It's how we as parents raise our children that is causing the problem.. there are so many single parents, young parents, uninterested parents, and many are simply not doing the job well. This is what is causing havoc in our society. How can we expect children to raise children. We are fatter and lazier all around, and this is giving rise to apathy. We are now too lazy to say no to our children..nobody wants to be the bad guy.. parents today want to be their kids friend, not their parent.. WHAT HAPPENED TO BEING A MENTOR TO YOUR KID. Let them make their own friends.
And it's not the schools fault either.. and no I am not a teacher.

It isn't too early. It's biologically where it should be. It's society that needs to change, not biology.
