I'd imagine it's not considered "normal," but I'd definitely say that it's better, for you and for society.
I read a LOT when I was a teenager, and was a lot more physically and mentally active then. After I had my kids, I never found the quiet time to read anymore, but t.v. was easily and readily available. Now I'm fairly addicted to t.v., feel lazy and relatively brain dead all of the time, and rarely do anything active anymore. :(
T.V. has literally been shown to decrease i.q. Besides that, watching the passive violence on t.v. has been shown to desensitize us to violence and thereby causes some people to act out more, or be more apathetic to violence. I know, plenty of people disagree, but the fact is that kids and the average adult of previous generations - before television - by and large weren't as violent as generations since.
Reading - even a violent book - on the other hand, encourages and develops our imaginations and i.q., as we have to visualize the story. Also, it's literally mental exercise as opposed to the passive inactivity of watching t.v.
I'd say be less concerned about being "normal," and do what you enjoy, do what's best for you. As long as it doesn't do any harm, it's a good thing. Reading is definitely a good thing.

I prefer books to tv anyday. But I don't think that is the norm in todays world, too many kids can't even read.

yes it is, some people prefer reading to tv and the other way around. I personally love reading and do spend minimal if any time in front of the telly.

no, it is great that you like to read more than watch TV, I wish I could get into books. I can't focus long enough to read a book. I read a few paragraphs and my mind wanders.

I think it's totally normal. Some people feel better curled up with a book than zoned out in front of the TV
If it's not normal, then I'll be abnormal with you!!
