Im in an F1 tipping pool and they have classified Michael as 8th (still in the points). Even Formula1.com website has Michael as finishing 8th. I saw him drive into the pits and get out of the car and I am pretty sure it was before the race ended. Is there a rule I am missing?

Toxic is right. You can see on the FIA regulations link below that they have to finish 90% of the race to be classified. So even though he retired, Tiago was 3 laps behind and did not catch him before the race ended. With Kubica's DSQ, he moved up to eight and got a point. He is so lucky!

I was wondering that then I remembered that a race is classified as a race (if you follow me) when they have finished 75% of it. As Michael had completed more than that, he was classified as a finisher and got one point when he was bumped up to eighth.
On a similar note, we've had races which have been red flagged due to an accident. If they haven't finished 75% of the allocated distance, they start it again and add the two times of each race together so effectively, it's in two parts.

Because Kubica was penalized by FIA because their car was running 2Kg lighter than the FIA specified weight. And since Scuhmi has finished more than 75% of the race he was eligible to take Kubica's position and his points. The championship is closing by each point.

the last lap is when the winner crosses the line, so any lapped traffic ahead of teh winner gets to do another lap but all behind him are classified that number of laps behind

schumacher was several laps ahead of the rest of the field below 9th bcos he had been on lead lap, so he gets classified ahead of them as he finished 75% of race and retired on lead lap
