i am aware that display and hard disk turn off. what about ram, processor, motherboard chips and its circuitry, touchpad etc?

The computer shuts off the Harddrive, monitor, and the touchpad. Only the motherboard really stays on and any external thing you may have plugged in such as a flashdrive. Some level of ram has to stay on so when you click or move the mouse the screen comes back on. Make sure your laptop is on AC power or it will hibernate on you after a while.

Logically speaking the processor saves the memory addresses in its registers and the motherboard keeps running. All the circuitry is working. But rest all is on a stand still.

idk about the touchpad but theres still stuff running there. ya i guess that would be the motherboard. you wouldnt need the ram to still run.

internal memory .. it goes to sleep mode but stays active .. its all safe to do so ..
