A caucus is kind of a mini convention where the people present can openly discuss their opinions and only the people present get to vote on who the party candidate will be. A primary is more like a regular election - everyone in the party can participate but you have to go to the polls to vote and while you're there you can't talk about politics. Caucuses are more suited to small communities with less formality, but they limit the range of representation.

caucus, like Iowa, you give speeched before the votes and it takes a long time whereas in a primary, you just have to show up to place your ballot. Caucuses are only done in about 14 states and is being replaced by primaries.
