Not calculated but counted. There are only a few thousand stars bright enough to see without a telescope and people have actually counted them all. The only trouble is that some people have better eyes that others, so some stars that most people cannot see unless they use a telescope are easily visible to other people with only their naked eyes, so the number is not exactly defined.

There is a way to mathematically calculate the number of stars visible to the naked eye though I've never done it myself.

The number of stars visible actually varies significantly, depending on location, atmospheric conditions, and the likes. Most people don't realize that the number of stars they see in the night sky from the suburbs or thr city is nothing compared to the number that's actually visible in areas away from light pollution.

The Cambridge Star Atlas shows about 9500 stars down to magnitude 6.5. This is a reasonable approximation of what's visible to the naked eye under a dark sky.

In the city around only 150 to 500.
100 to 200 kilometers out from a city maybe 1,500 to 2000.
In the country 2,500 and more depending on the individuals eye sight capabilities..
Everyone has a different visual perception and it is greatly reduced under certain conditions. Even on a crystal clear night what they call “sky quaking” occurs that reduce even the brightest star.

not 4 sure- but I do know, when u look at a star u are looking into the past. [light speed] it takes 8 min. for the light from the sun to reach earth, so when u look at the sun , you are looking 8 min into the past. U might have already known this, lol sorry I did'nt answer your question, I was just trying to seem smart lol
