Whatever bike you choose, you should take a few things into account.
First, don't get anything new. If you go down, or drop the bike, as beginners tend to do, it is much less painful (mentally) to drop a used bike.
Second. Don't get anything over 750cc. You don't need that much power yet, and more power tends to make you go faster and ride beyond your capability.
A good starter bike would be something like a Honda Rebel, or Nighthawk 650.
Don't be in a hurry to cut through traffic, or shoot the mountain passes yet That kevek will come soon enough. Just get comfortable riding, and know your capabilities.

A mid 80's Honda VT 500 Shadow would make an excellent beginner bike. Or a 450 Rebel is a bit more towards pure cruiser. Also check out the Yamaha 535 Virago, a very realiable bike.
I've ridden all of these and many many more as I work at used motorcycle shop here in San Antonio, Texas. My current, personal ride is a '99 Triumph Sprint ST.

ditto (vladohp). You want something low , relatively light that still makes goo power. While the 250cc Rebel or Vulcan is a great bike to learn on, you'll outgrow it in a heartbeat,.
The Honda 600 Shadow VLX is a great bike, as is the 500cc Vulcan. The mid sized VStars and Vulcans all deserve a look, too.
I prefer liquid cooled engines.

You'll be disappointed with the performance of the 250cc cruisers, even if you are beginner. Get Honda shadow vlx 600cc, or Yamaha vstar 650cc, they are very easy to ride and it won't take eternity to get to 60 mph.

Honda 750 Shadow or Star 650, both are rather light and have a low seat height. They both have enough power, so you won't outgrow it too soon.
