I have been taking prednisone for 6 days now to clear up poison ivy. Is it possible that it is causing weight gain already? I have gained almost 5 lbs in 6 days. Is it just water retention or what? What side effects are caused by prednisone that would occur in such a short amount of time? And will they continue for a while after I stop taking them (I'm supposed to take 2 a day for 7 days)?

Yes. Prednisone can cause weight gain that quickly. I have had to take it before for severe allergic reaction with asthma and my husband has for poison ivy. You can gain like 10 pounds just in the time you take one dose pak. And it's got to be actual weight, not just water, because it does NOT come right off. I'm still working off the 10 pounds from a dose pak four months ago. Of course, I'm 45 and it's harder to lose, but still ...

At a high dosage, prednisone may cause fluid retention and high blood pressure. If this happens, you may need a low-salt diet and a potassium supplement.

It definitely can cause that much weight gain in that period of time. Yes, it's fluid retention. It will resolve after you've stopped taking it a few days. Continue taking it as directed by your doctor.
