Hi all,

I have an old 16 MB USB flash drive that came with my Presario X1000 laptop. It's just like this Dell one at http://img.shopping.com/cctool/PrdImg/images/pr/177X150/00/01/64/05/91/23332241.JPG , but it has no markings whatsoever, so I don't even know what brand it is. The thing is, I just can't get it to work in my older Prosignia laptop in order to transfer some files. I've tried everything. I downloaded some generic drivers, and it appears in My Computer when connected, but every time I try to open it, it says the disk can't be read and has to be reformatted. When I try to reformat it, Windows said the disk could not be formatted because the computer does not have enough memory (the laptop has 32 MB of memory).

Anyone know how to get it to work?

I open the device manager, and it says it is an M-Sys DiskOnKey. I download and install the drivers, and it still appears as an unaccessible icon in My Computer.

Plug it in to a computer that actually sees the flash drive. Go to Device Manager and find out what it is. It will tell you there what kind of flash drive it is. It might be under removable media or USB devices. Then go online and search for that device and look for Windows 98 drivers for that drive. All USB 2.0 devices are compatible with USB 1.1 except that it goes really slow. But if you are just transferring files our something small then your flash drive should be fine. A word document might take you 15 seconds to transfer in 1.1 whereas it would take 1 second in 2.0. You can purchase a PCMCIA USB 2.0 card but i would get the slower speeds. Hope this helps!

Do you happen to know which version of win98 you have? The reason I ask is Win98 didn't have USB support, that I remember anyway. If you have Second Edition, you should be able to download and install the Windows update to give you USB support.

Try the driver for the dell model, it may work. If it looks the same it probably is the same. if it doesnt, dont waste your time, as someone said, 98 needs a driver installed. I wouldnt waste too much time on it tho considering you can go to walmart or kmart and buy a 256 meg for as little as 15 bucks. Try tiger direct also but avoid the so called rebates! You might also try to reformat it on someones win2k or xp op sys.

Newer Flash drives require a 2.0 USB port, your laptop probably has a 1.0. If it were with a CPU you could just buy and install a new USB port, im not to sure about laptops. certain models cant be taken apart like most computers can.
