Tylenol and warmed olive oil in the affected ear for right now. Put a towel down on the pillow and have your son keep the affected ear upright and let the oil stay in the ear a while. Warm the oil just until it feels pleasant on the wrist.
Mullein oil, a few drops in the affected ear, helps a lot. Of course this must be purchased at an herbal remedy store. But think about getting some later to keep on hand, I use it when ever my ears feel slightly achy, usually in the winter time, and it keeps things from getting worse, USUALLY.
In the summer, if you swim and get water in your ears, clean them out after showering by placing a little hydrogen peroxide in each ear canal. It will prevent that fungus ear problem so many people get.

I have heard that a drop or two of clove or garlic oil from a soft gel pill that you have pricked with a pin will dull the pain for a little while.

If you have an earache, you might have an infection. See your doctor, or if you don't want to, just relax.
