He's old enough. Go down to the elementary school and register him. The test takes maybe 10 to 20 minutes, at least here in Texas.

They'll ask him some basic number and letter questions, see if he can write or draw (they gauge something in the pictures, don't ask me WHAT!) and then they give a score just as a baseline as to whether they're prepared for Kindergarden or not. If not, usually they'll have Pre-K available, too.

There's nothing really major about the test. Basically, it gives them an idea of where to place the children in different classes. They aren't expected to be geniuses, but children by the age of 5 have picked up a few things over the years.

My youngest just started Kindergarden today, and we had to go through all that with her! We also had to get her 4 immunizations, and she's real proud of the fact that she didn't cry at all!

if he's like 99% of kids his age, he's too young - do him a favor and keep him out.

he will be so harmed by most K programs. they are not designed for his age. he'll end the year feeling bad and stupid. all just for being a terrific boy.

just keep him home with you, go on frequent walks, museum tours, concerts, plays, outings, read lots and lots, build things, cook together - pointing out all those fractions - and he'll be so advanced in a year you'll homeschool him to keep the good stuff going.
