For years, I've heard that this will extend the life of household batteries but I wonder if it's true? Can anyone explain this? Thanks!

Greetings....

This one bothered me some time back and so after a little research....NO -and maybe...depends on battery type and where you live.
There are some battery myths out there and this is one of em.... the chemical process in a battery only takes place when the current is flowing (turning on the flashlight) any leakage loss is so little it would take years to deplete it BUT the hotter the climate the more the leakage... For some types of batteries....
I even bookmarked it so it is listed as a source...

Myths....... now if i could just find that 100mile per gallon carburator.....

Take care.

No. It's no different than the myth about putting your candles in the freezer to make them burn longer (you don't do that do you?). It just makes them crack and/or break after you take them out.
As for batteries; don't do it! You may in fact be damaging them!
Some of my rechargeables even say "Do not expose to extreme temperatures
under 5F or above 130F.May shorten life of battery"!
Our freezer is set at -15F so that would be a no-no.
We stopped putting them in there years ago.
(along with the candles) ;-)

yes. because it slows down the chemical reaction inside the batteries.
