The irony is that we're the ones who gave Cuba its independence. It cost us a great amount of money to buy their freedom for them. But when we had the chance to make them a commonwealth, we passed.

I think it's more likely that we'll see the Upper Peninsula of Michigan succeed in their attempt to become the 51st state long before Cuba would even become a protectorate. There are too many Cubans who have made their fortunes here and are ready to swoop back into their homeland and construct a new government. They wouldn't want statehood because it would diminish the influence of their money and their quest for power.

Fidel Castro will die--you know that, so you mean "When Fidel Castro..."

Anyway, the answer is NO. If we wanted Cuba to be a state, it would have happened immediately following the tragically unnecessary Spanish-American war.

What makes you think that, anyway? Cuba is a sovereign country, just like any other.

No, 52nd or 53rd. Puerto Rico has first dibs on the #51 spot. Cuba will need another revolution, a junta, US intervention, then a period of reconstruction before they're ready for statehood. Haiti will probably beat them to it since they don't have a real government to get rid of.

Believe me, he's already got someone waiting behind him. Just like Osama. People think if we kill him we'll really stick it to terrorism. Don't people think of the others that are waiting in anticipation to take his place?
