Cingular, T-Mobile, and Verizon are the most famous ones.
A lot of people use these services because its cheap and has good reception.
From best to worst out of the three services, I would say its....
T-Mobile
Verizon
Cingular
Pros for each service:
T-Mobile---good & cheaptest plan
Verizon---good coverage
Cingular---Roll over minutes.
I say you should ask your friends/people who live around you because each plan has their unlimited phone to phone call. (calling each other with the same plan is FREE!)
Cons for each service:
T-Mobile---dont have good phones
Verizon---kinda expensive...i dont like the menu system of thier phones
Cingular---takes a lot of EXTRA money

Its really your choice, but i suggest you choose one of the services I mentioned above.

For several years in a row Verizon Wireless won best cell phone reception in the Consumer Reports cellphone issue. When I go places with my freinds and family, my verizon phone gets less dropped calls and has more reception than the phones around me.
These phones include Sprint, Cingular, and Tmobile.

T-Mobile and Nextell have half the coverage of the top three. Virgin Mobile since it uses some of the Sprint towers has only half the reception that Sprint had. MetroPCS is joke; people in Sacramento call it ghetto PCS.
I have sold phones for all these companies except Tmobile and Metro. Verizon in my opionion has the best reception.

Best service? Depends on where you plan to use it. For nationwide roaming Sprint and Verizon have far superior coverage with CDMA (Virgin Mobile is simply Sprint pay-by-the-minute.) For worldwide roaming T-Mobile and Cingular use the (older) but more standard GSM (although this is beginning to be replaced by a form of CDMA: W-CDMA.) The lowest monthly price will be with Sprint. Metro PCS has a very limited network even though they use CDMA. Alltel is also CDMA and have coverage similar to Sprint and Verizon. Nextel/Boost can be good for some who want the best walkie-talkie service, but IDEN getting phased out possibly soon and has fairly limited coverage. You will find lovers and haters of each of these companies. You should talk to those in your area to figure out the best plan.

Sprint. Personal experience. I spend a LOT of time traveling and get service world wide. There's NO roaming charges, ever. You can now have walkie-talkie service with Sprint as well. They're the only company that has never screwed up a bill of mine. Verizon screwed up 6 in a row... Also, their plans truly ARE fair & flexible. You can start nights as early as 6pm (most companies only start at 7pm). I've had great luck with Sprint and almost never have problems getting a signal (including in Alaska, Canada, and Russia).

I was checking out this site and I agree with their opinions so I thought I'd list them for you.

Verizon- best coverage
Cingular- more features than verizon for the same price, plus offers the most mobile to mobile customers
T-Mobile- cheap service and good coverage
Sprint PCS- cheap, high speed internet, not the best coverage
Sprint/Nextel- known for the walkie talkies
Alltel- choose who you call for free but not available everywhere

In my opinon I believe T-MOBILE is the best because it has the cheapest plans for the most coverage.

In terms of service and reception: they're all about equal and even the phone model you choose will affect service so it's hard to compare them. They all have some exclusive phone models that rock, but most of their cheap phones are awful.

The best way to pick a service provider is: Find a phone you want and see who has that phone. Use a website like www.phonescoop.com to compare features and read reviews. Then find a provider who sells that phone and choose a plan that fits your budget and usage needs. Great reception and a good plan will not make you happy if you're stuck with a huge brick that only beeps out ringtones.

I think the 2 main things to take into account are
1) the coverage in your area, and
2) what most of your friends/aquaintences have because it is free to talk (and in some cases text) to other people within your carrier.
For example, I have cingular and most of my friends have verizon. It is a real pain because I can't talk to them till after 9.

I switched to Cingular cause of the Roll Over Minutes....if I paid for the minutes I want to keep them. I dont see any other company doing that.

Where I live, it's definitely Verizon. Best coverage in the area.
