Abreeva and Herpecin-L (cheaper) work with healing cold sores fast. An oral anti-flammatory like excedrin should help with swelling that is around the puss area. Sometimes I have to burst mine with a hot sterile sewing needle and then put alcohol, peroxide and abreeva on it. Painful, but it works for me. Controling and trying to minimize the break outs of cold sores is the only key right now since there is no cure for this strand of herpes. Ice and salt water (i.e. magnesium sulfate) can help draw up blood cells and reduce puss, and hence probably decrease the swelling. Do not use anything with peppermint or tee tree or any such things that will cause blood to rush towards your lip versus away from it. You don't want to use glosses or shiny lip balm that will make it look worse. Stick with matte finishes in natural or nude colors that will help blend in your bigger lip with the rest of your lips. Keep applying abreeva or herpecin-L because the out break can sometimes form pusss and a layer underneath the medicine that can be wiped away with the medicine. You must always re-apply the medicine.

A Lysine tablet along with your daily vitamin will help keep cold sores away.

I started to run a temperature a few days ago, and I wasn't taking the lysine.
I took the lysine to late - the fever went away, but for the cold sore it was to late.
You really have to take the lysine before the cold sore forms.

Lysine is an amino acid that you can get at the drug store or health food store.

I prefer rubbing alcohol to dry it up. I don't like the creams they sell at the drug store - but they do help the itch.
