A Thousand Acres by Jane Smiley won the Pulitzer in 1992. This novel places the King Lear story on a large (1,000 acre) farm. The story is told from the point of view of the oldest sister, and the usual villains are the sympathetic characters. It was also adapted into a movie, but I have not seen it.

Other retellings include 10 Things I Hate About You and Kiss Me Kate (The Taming of the Shrew), She's the Man (Twelfth Night), O (Othello), West Side Story (Romeo and Juliet).

Tom Stoppard often uses Shakespeare: Shakespeare In Love, Rosecrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, Cahoot's MacBeth, Dogg's Hamlet (which included the 15-Minute Hamlet).

The plays in the collection "Love's Fire" are all inspired by sonnets. There are many other plays that reflect of use Shakespeare's ideas or characters.

If you want something a bit older check out The Tamer Tamed by John Fletcher, a sometimes collaborator of Shakespeare's. It is a sequel to The Taming of the Shrew written after Shakespeare's death.

The novel Tam Lin by Pamela Dean includes scenes in which the characters watch and then discuss performances of Hamlet and Rosencranrz and Guildenstern Are Dead. (SPOILER: Also, several of the characters were members of Shakespeare's acting troupe.)

Enjoy!

10 Things I Hate About You is based on The Taming of the Shrew.

Girls of the age that usually asks this type of question seem to have usually seen that movie.

If not, there are plenty of songs that mention Romeo and Juliet.
