MAKE SURE ITS A REAL HUMANE SOCIETY AND NOT A RESCUE GROUP THAT USES THAT NAME IN THEIR TITLE. ALOT OF RESCUE GROUPS WILL DO THAT.
WELL IF YOU WANT TO WORK AT THE HSUS OR SPCA TRY GOING TO THEIR PAGES AND SEEING WHAT THEY ARE LOOKING FOR. THE HSUS HOLDS ALOT OF COLLEGE LEVEL CLASSES AT THEIR HUMANE UNIVERSITY OF WHICH WILL GIVE YOU AN UPPER LEG, THEY ALSO OFFER SCHOLARSHIPS FOR QUALIFIED APPLICANTS.
ALOT OF TIMES THE BEST WAY TO GET A FOOT IN IS TO VOLUNTEER FOR YOUR LOCAL OFFICE AND THEN APPLY FOR A JOB LATER ON.

The very best way to get a job with an animal shelter is to start as a volunteer. I was lucky to have volunteered for only 4 months when I got hired at my local shelter. Basically I volunteered 2 days a week, offered every week to help out whenever they were short staffed, did extra things for them (bought and donated food, supplies, etc), helped out with their fundraisers, etc. I submitted my resume to them, then found out later that they would be hiring someone temporarily. I handed in my resume again, and got hired. Mind you, I also told them every week that I wanted a job with them, no matter what kind of job, lol.

That temp job lasted for almost 3 years. I had to leave for a few reasons, but honestly it was the best experience for me.

Show them that you are dedicated to the society, that you love animals, and you respect their work. Also, if you can, read up anything and everything about the types of animals you would be working with. For me that was primarily dogs and cats, but also: birds, rodents, rabbits, wildlife, horses, cattle, emus, pigs, ferrets, reptiles, fish and many more.

Good luck! It is a very rewarding job if you can get into it. It is also very difficult and emotional, and can pose risks of varrying degrees. But if you love animals, and can handle the emotional distress of the job, and have the emotion maturity it takes, then go for it!
