through auctions from salvation army warehouses to garage sales, you can get really nice things for very little.

Yes, through garage sales and thrift stores. Choose the bigger thrift stores, like St. Vincent de Paul. I've scored some wonderful things there.

The hard one to get cheap is a decent bed, but Deseret Industries has matresses and springs at relatively reasonable prices.

Try advertising in the newspaper, going to rummage sales or thrift stores. I know I could get it done but whether or not you can will depend on where you live and how much time and effort you are willing to put into it.
