You can try to do it, but it probably won't do much to help you. Most of the time, the rooms are assigned the day before arrival by computer.

Try this instead: call the hotel directly and ask for the front desk manager's name and the fax number. Send that person a nice note requesting an upgrade. Bonus if it's your first time at the hotel and/or a special occasion. The worst they can tell you is that it can't be done.

you don't need to bribe them. you have an equally good chance to get an upgrade if you ask nicely. talk to them and see what they have available. if you make reservations at other places in the hotel (restaurants, vip for lounge/club) then often they will upgrade for you. i'd save your cash until they actually do something for you. most likely a bribe will be met with a polite 'no, thank you'.
