As others have said, DL and BC do it for now. Passports required soon. Apply now, it takes a month or two.

I'd also note that long guns are getting more bothersome to bring from US to Can ($50 reg form to fill out) and handguns have been strictly forbidden for a long time. Recreational drugs are always a very bad idea to bring across international borders.

Hauling commercial quantities of anything (cigarettes to Can, medicines to US, etc), can get you in trouble. Personal quantities are allowed (if of age, with prescription, etc).

Mostly, it is a big non-event. They ask a few questions, "where are you going?","where are you staying?", "who are visiting?". If you are nervous, don't know where you're going or look disreputable, they will go into more detail.

A dozen times I've breezed through, but back as a long-haired college student, I've had my entire car searched (going in Can) and was required to leave an Apple computer in the US (it was 1979 and Canadians apparently hadn't heard of home computers)!

With a haircut and a clean shirt, it takes 30 seconds to answer their questions (after you queue up for 20 minutes, more on weekends).

Times are a-changing honey. Used to be a simple flash of your drivers licence and perhaps birth certificate and you were good to go. Now, a passport is recommended, or you will be held up being asked why you don't have a passport and your BC and licence scrutinized. Good news - USA and canadian citizens do not need visas to visit each other. However, if you have a criminal record, I wouldn't recommend crossing.

Right now a drivers license or a birth certificate is all you need. After 1-1-07 you will need a passport.

I just got back from Canada last week. All I needed was my driver's license.

After December 31, 2006, you will need a passport or other authorized ID to go into Canada or Mexico.

For visiting, you need a birth certificate, and an official photo ID, such as a drivers license, or a passport if you have one. This is what you need either direction.

Passports will be required in January 2007, until then, 2 pieces of vaild governments ID will do. 99% of the time even just a drivers license will be fine.
