I'm pretty sure that most people here on Yahoo Answers really don't have much of a life and try to make up for it by being on here trying to find meaning to their lives by answering random questions. Although there is the incentive by Yahoo Answers in allowing people to think they're experts in the many areas available on Answers. Despite this, you would think most people - especially those who want to move up several levels - would only answer with simple yes or no responses and then move on to the next random question. By and large I think most people really think they are imparting tried and true wisdom and practical knowledge simply because they've experienced these things themselves or feel like they have special insight.
But really, I don't know why.

and BTW, there is the 10 points at stake for the best answer, so you either give the best answer or write a long essay and confuse the questioner into voting your's as the best.

The very long essays are usually copied straight off of Wikipedia - you can tell by the paragraph markers.
Technically, according to the message admins, if they are pages and pages long, they can be reported - especially if off topic - but I don't know of any that have been removed over this.

Because some questions are not answered by a simple answer. other reasons might be they just want to show off or are bored.
