For real numbers, the multiplicative inverse for a number x is
x^(-1). This is another way of saying division.

Informal Proof:

x*x^(-1) = x^(1-1) = x^0 = 1.

In order for a process A to an inverse for some process B, when applied to B is must produce an Indentity.

If A is a sqaure matrix, and the inverse of B, then

A = B^(-1)

In this case AB = B^(-1)B = I, where I is the identity matrix.
In the case that A is a one by one matrix, it contains only 1 number, and so the particular process of matrix multiplication above reduces to division, and the Identity matrix reduces to the number 1.
