You mean like 25% off.

There are two ways. Multiply .25 by the number then subtract or.

Take 100% or 1 and subtract the amount you want off. Then multiply the result byyour number
1 - .25 = .75

It's easiest to round the 39.95 up to a whole number...so make it 40.00. 25% is the same as 1/4 (a quarter) 1/4 of 40=10. So subtract 10.00 off to get an estimate. If you want the EXACT answer you have to multiply the percentage by the number to get your answer. You have to turn the percentage into a decimal. (Ex: .50 *5=2.5 and .25*39.95=9.9875 WHICH ROUNDS UP TO 9.99)

First: It's important to remember that "%" means out of 100.

Second: If you see _?_% it may be easiest to convert it to a fraction. For example 25% = 25/100. Then you need to reduce it to the lowest possible fraction if possible. In this case, the lowest fraction would be 1/4.

Third: To subtract a percentage of something from something else do this (using your examples):

Subtracting 25% (fraction = 1/4) from 39.95...

39.95 - (39.95)/4

= 39.95 - 9.99

= 29.96

Subtracting 50% (fraction = 1/2) from 39.95...

39.95 - (39.95)/2

= 39.95 - 19.98

= 19.97

Subtracting 5% (fraction = 1/20) from 39.95...

39.95 - (39.95)/20

= 39.95 - 1.99

= 37.96

25% is one quarter. Divide 39.95 by 4 then substract that answer from 39.95.
Hints: 50% is one half
5% is one twentieth.

Try it.

Multiply it by the decimal (.25) and then subtract, or multiply it by the difference from 100%.

Example:
If you want to subtract 25% from something, multiply it by .75

39.95 x .25 = 9.9875
39.95 - 9.9875 = 29.9685

39.95 / 2 = 19.975

39.95 x 0.05 = 1.9975
39.95 - 1.9975 = 37.9525
