RE:
I need help decorating a 5th grade classroom!?
I am a first-year teacher in California teaching 5th-8th math and I have a 5th grade homeroom. Can someone give me some pointers about creatively decorating a classroom for middle school students?

Consider basing your school year on a theme. Middle schoolers are going to be a tougher audience as far as critiqing your decorations in the classroom. Perhaps do a theme involving something tropical. Palm trees, flowers, ect. Make your classroom feel laidback and comfortable. Check-out orientaltradings.com. They have a slew of decorations for all sorts of themes. Remember, you are dealing with kids ages 10-14 so it needs to be "cool" to them!
Good luck and have a great school year!

make your classroom buisy. Have quotes from mathmatitions all over the room. Try hanging up math symbols. You might want to take on a persona when you teach. You could be the math wizzard, in which case you'd add in a wizzard theme to your room. You could stress that your students are not students they are math apprentaces. Anyway thats just a crazy idea from a high school student. I know that if I'm in a class room that is filled with that subject then it is easier for me to remember.

I would give the freedom to let the kids decide together, why not give them them the opportunity to show there capabilities allow this surprise be a gift to you and a class project. I think if a class wants to get to know the teacher I would start by teambuilding with the class...I'm an American / Dutch living in The Netherlands and plenty of schools here do this sort of thing...even get the parents crazy enough to join in too with a bucket of paint and a brush.....Don't the forget some background music...Kids love that too!
California teacher Good-Luck to you and your class !

It depends on the subject(s) you'll be teaching. You have to have that huge calendar with the border around it that you change each month, posters pertaining to your subject(s), typical inspirational posters, our 7th and 8th grade was in a building separate from 5th and 6th. 5th and 6th was a bit more juvenile while the 7th and 8th rooms were more sterile....I'd go for colorful and stuff all over...the sterile rooms are so boring and put people to sleep easier.

i'm not a teacher but as a student i loved it when my classrooms had comics and funnies hanging up. you can always find some about school. charlie brown, frank and ernie, and garfield are all great. you can probably print them off from their websites. i'm sure there are math related ones in there. :D hope that helps!

"Around the World" ya know..the earth with the little boys and girls holding hands....it is a great way to promote cultural awareness and include your student's backgrounds into the lessons. Also a good way to have themes throughout the year as you encounter other countries' holidays, etc
