Something that they will have fun and start to learn about responsibility (for the 6 year old), but not too much work (since mom and dad will most likely end up doing all the work). Nothing bigger than the kids themselves. Mommy is allergic to cats.

Our kids enjoyed gerbils and goldfish when they were that age. But don't get them gerbils if you can't trust them to be gentle. stay away from reptiles -- kids can get salmonella from them, according to our pediatrician. Don't overfeed the goldfish, and they'll live a long time.

a pair of rats would be good - 1 for each boy, plus they enjoy the company of another rat. not hamsters, gerbils, or mice as they are too small & fragile for boys that age. maybe a guinea pig. fish would be good. the tadpole idea was cool. whatever u choose check the lifespan first so u know what youre getting into. also how much cleaning is required as that is what most people dont want to do & what sometimes causes an early death.

Try a beta fish for the 4 year old. They are real easy and don't need a filter in the tank. +Breath air! ;)
A medium rodent may be the best for the 6 year old. A lot of littler one (like dwarf hamters) may be too fragile. A guinea pig, syrian hamter, or rat are worth looking into.

I would recommend a rat, or a couple of boy rats. They make great pets, I swear a child can throw one against a wall and it will be alright and will still not bite (not like any gerbil, mouse, or hamster). I'm 22, and I have 3. I love to make dinner for them, I feed them their rat food along with scraps, and I buy them steamfresh veggie mix and marie calendar's micro meals. They are darling, like little fat chipmunks, very sweet, love to give kisses, don't have to worry about them escaping, they always come back to thier cage. Their tails are hard for some to handle, but I give mine baths and they smell nice. They are almost like little dogs, they love to be scratched on their heads and they will eat anying. It is funny to watch King Koopa eat speghetti, he is like a little noode-chipper.

A Rabbit or a Guinea pig are great pets. They are also great because they eat all the scrap vegetables. And my kids bring ours inside and play with them.

I bought my daughter a Russian Tortoise, very easy to care for. And yes She is now 13 and I am still taking care of the turtle.

It depends. A hamster's a good choice, though in my opinion it might be a bit stinky. -phew- A guinea pig is a better choice, bigger, and not-so-stinky.

I would recommend fish or a turtle. What about Sea Monkies? Or an ant farm.
