My son is looking at various ACM schools, (such as Knox, Coe, Cornell, Beloit, Lawrence, Grinnell, Colorado College, Carleton, U of Chicago, Lake Forest, Macalester, Monmouth, Ripon, St. Olaf) so, those of you who are knowledgeable about ACM schools...please give me your opinion. This is an open-ended question. Discuss the school(s) you like/dislike and why. Discuss your experiences/thoughts/etc. Be as specific as possible, including the names of professors who impacted you (positively or negatively!) Thanks!

I can tell you that in terms of academic ranking and difficulty of admission, you've named both Tier 1 (highly ranked and highly selective admissions) and Tier 2 (selective admissions) schools.

The Tier 1 schools on your list are:
Carleton
University of Chicago
Macalester

Among the Tier 2 schools you've mentioned, Colorado College, Cornell College (not Cornell U, of course), and Grinnell are on the rise in terms of their national reputations, and are considered to be selective (as opposed to highly selective) in terms of admissions.

You might want to take a look at this recent NY Times article, which refers to the Tier 2 schools above as "hidden gems."

The others are only moderately selective in terms of admissions, and have regional as opposed to national reputations.

You seem to be looking for more specific input from alumni, but I thought my response couldn't hurt.

not all faculties on the East Coast are cutthroat and aggressive. And there are truthfully aggressive faculties on the West coast. you may desire to base your opinion on man or woman faculties, not what area they're in. i pass to a school on the East Coast, approximately quarter-hour remote from Johns Hopkins. the version in atmosphere between Hopkins and my college is large, even however we are interior an identical state. for sure, the area would not dictate the social atmosphere.
