That's two different questions, really: discovery and advancement. For discovery, it will always be open to debate, but the important ones are the ones that were a shot in the dark - the ones that WEREN'T inevitable. Humans were destined to harness fire, figure out electricity, etc. In modern times, even things like harnessing radioactivity and Darwin's theory of natural selection were inevitable. Now, take something like quantum physics/mechanics...some groundbreaking work and NOT inevitable. And this field only gets more important.

As far as advancements go, that's an easy one: language. This is what set humanity apart.
