4 hours a week is enough, you can always practice yourself. i take classes 6 hours a week, and practice whenever i can. my instructor is hardcore; he practices himself almost everywhere. and he's really good now.
so if you have money issues, learn to make the best of your 4 hours, be dedicated and hardworking and it'll be enough. =))

I'm confused. You started out on Yahoo! Answers saying you wanted to "do" contemporary dance and wondered if you're too old to start at 16. So what exactly do you want to DO with dance? Be a professional or just dance for fun?

If you just want to dance for fun, then it's never too late to start and you can take as little dance classes as you want. But if you want to be professional, then no young dancer - male or female - should be taking class less than 10 hours a week at your age. Girls really shouldn't be doing anything less than 15 hours a week by the time they're 16. You admit you're starting late, but if you think 4 hours a week is enough to catch up, then you're really fooling yourself.

Most reputable dance schools offer scholarships to male dancers, as they're a prized commodity in the dance world and need to be encouraged and cultivated. If you live in the middle of nowhere, then a reputable dance school may be hard to find. But call every school within commuting distance to see if any will offer you financial aid.

If you're really serious about becoming a dancer, then please don't settle for the advice you'll find here on Yahoo! Answers. The Ballet Talk for Dancers message board has an entire section called "The Men's Forum" where you can find professional advice about becoming a dancer. You should really check it out:

It depends on what kind of dancing you want to do. Also, if you live in a fairly large city, you can start out inexpensively at places like YMCA, Leisure Learning schools, Community Colleges, etc., or you can take group lessons which are cheaper. It depends on if you are coordinated or a fast learner. 4 hours a week is enough to learn. It doesn't take much time to learn, its the practicing that takes a lot of time. You dont want to waste time & money by practicing at paid for lessons. Otherwards, 1 hour lesson with 10-15 hours of practice does more good than 4 hours of lessons and only 2-3 hours of practice. Saves money too. It depends on what you want to do with your dancing.

4 hours a week training is plenty, if you are dedicated enough to put forth the effort outside of class. Take what you learn each week and practice daily!

If you show your mom you are dedicated in dance class and outside of dance class, I am sure she won't have a problem.

You may need to get another job to afford all the extras that go along with class, if your mother can't afford it, or wont pay. (shoes, costumes, etc).

Prove you are an adult, show dedication, self-confidence and determination... you can do anything.

Depends on the kind of lessons. Used to be dance lessons were a 1 hour a week thing, unless you were planning on being a professional or were cramming just before your own wedding.

4 hours a week in class is enough, if you practise what you have learned between classes, remember the saying "practise makes perfect" It sounds like the only problem you have is how you are going to pay for the lessons in the first place

4 hours of instructions should be enough, if you're talking about ballroom/latin

My coaches (world class level professionals) take about that much intructions. I take 1-2 hours. You should practce by yourself for approx 4 hours per every hour of intructions, otherwise you're wasting your money.

Oh, yeah, right, you wanted to do contemporary dance... From my old days with ballet, I still think 4 hrs should be enough instructions, for starters. Plenty, actually.
