Racism is on the fine line between free speech and verbal assault. It's rude and it's morally wrong. People still do it because they either are racist against particular people or think it's funny and like to rile up people. People do it on the internet much more than in real life because the internet is anonomous. They think that because they're hiding behind a screenname, it's all right to say these hurtful things. People also think that they can be rude, childish, and ignorant because no one knows who they are. It's the same way people are in a mob. The mob could go around smashing windows, stealing, and hurting people, but the individual people in the mob would never do it by themselves.

The best thing you can do is ignore the people who say these things, report them, and remember that they aren't mature enough to be on the internet.

To answer your question, people make these comments for any one of the following reasons:

1. They truly believe what they are saying, however mean, unjust and absurd their point may be.
2. They haven't given it any thought, but their family, friends or peers say these same things, so they're just repeating.
3. They don't mean it at all, and they're saying it as a joke. This can happen sometimes when even the source of the comment is him/herself part of a visible minority, in which case it becomes part of their identity. Discrimination can be a very heavy burden, that will sometimes follow you all your life. Making fun of it feels like you've overcome it in a way.

I absolutely agree with you!! People hand out racist criticisms like it's cotton candy when really all they're doing is proving how moronic they really are. Why do they do it? Because they find anonymity convenient for their thoughts, thoughts that one should not express and should not even allow to enter their minds.
And I don't doubt that many of these people call themselves good Christians or good believers of whatever faith they have. Hypocrisy is hypocrisy no matter what you do while in a gathering or what you say when you're with people of a different ethnicity.
Racism is what ignites conflict and without it, we would truly be at peace.

So they don't have a right to voice their opinion but you do? Rather closed-minded of you isn't it?
