Tom Cheney 21 holds the record as he done this in an extra inning game. Roger Clemens struck out 20 twice and Kerry Wood struck out 20 once. Also Randy Johnson struck out 20 in an extra inning game so 4 pitchers accomplished this feat a total of 5 times with 3 done in 9 innings and 2 in extra innings.
