I'm happy with what I make and wonder what drives people to spend the study time for three straight years. Is it the money or does that aspect even hold true?

If you are happy with your career, then a CFA is not needed. CFA is normally a marketing tool to investment clients since it gives them a sense of security. It signifies that their financial adviser is competent enough to manage my money. Investment managers are normally aggressive and glory-seeking people. That is why they persue the CFA designation.
