federal laws are just that. FEDERAL. if you're a criminal in the u.s. the chinese won't care. i taught in south korea and they don't check your criminal records. the other tough step would be anybody with a record like that most likely will be on parole until the turn of the century so i'd forget about it.

I'm not too sure about your record; you would have to contact the Chinese Embassy to see if they would give you a work permit with that background, you have some pretty serious things there.

BUT, I just read an article in Time magazine, a fairly recent issue, no more than a month old, about the really horrible abuses of American & English teachers in China. Really awful, everything from breach of contract to mysterious death. Do lots of research before doing something like this.

There are ways to have a criminal record sealed, juvenile records ussaly get automatically sealed after so many years and adult criminal records can be sealed after 10 years or more if you dont comitt any crimes, not even getting a speeding ticket; in washington state that is called the "wash out period".

I suggest you consult a lawyer to see what can be done, if anything can be done.

i m not sure abt China but in England ppl r allowed 2 teach from jail (electronically and they r monitored).
