Oh I love comparisons. Here's my perspective of things. All SUVS chug gas and waste a considerable amount of space on the road, BUT I still love them for being so damn hated.
Car #1) Range Rover Sport: My #2 pick because it is so damn sexy. If you compare this to the normal Range Rover HSE you will never go back. There are however many ups and downs of this car which gives me reason to place it below my #1. The HSE model gives you a decent 300bhp while the Supercharged version gives you a whopping 390bhp in a 4.4L engine as well. The downside is that Land Rover has had very very very many issues with interior quality and overall reliability.
#2 BMW X5: This car gets my #3 pick because of electrical gremlins and the fact that its made in the good ol' US of A. It is a very sex car and has 3 engine choices; the 3.0, 4.4 and the 4.8IS. The 4.8is gives you 355bhp which is more than enough, the looks are 2nd to the Range Rover.
#3 Porsche Cayenne: This gets my #1 spot ONLY and ONLY if it is the Turbo version. Any other Cayenne is a useless waste of space and money. The reason I voted this the #1 car is because it has been showered with so much love/hate. The car is also damn sexy and comes with 340bhp.
#4 B ML Class : No comment, MB has been plagued with reliabiliy and quality issues since 1999 and hit its worst in 2003. Still no difference to date.

First of all, I'm going to define SUV for you. SUV-Sport Utility Vehicle. An SUV has to be sporty as in athletic sporty, not sporty looking. That rules out the BMW x5 and Benz ML because they are not athletic. An SUV has to have function (utility) and the only function that the Porsche Cayenne has is speed (buy a sports car instead). The only function that a BMW x5 and Benz ML have is the mini-van effectiveness. Oh, but I'm not picking the Range Rover either because it is not really any different than a Jeep Commander. Therefore, if you want a real SUV get a HUMMER. The people who own Cayenne's, x5's, Range Rover's, and Benz ML's hate it because their vehicles don't have the authority like a HUMMER. And, that my friend is why a HUMMER is Like Nothing Else.

From a technician's point of view, advising reliability, I'd stick with BMW or MB. The ML's have always been very reliable but MB has a problem with tail lights. One is always out or brighter than the other. BMW's are reliable and require low maintenence. I'm currently changing out another engine in a Range Rover(#2) due to a spun connecting rod bearing. She was denied at the dealer and she's paying my shop $16,000 for the repair. Porsche's use high quality everything. Brembo brakes, aluminum engines, cryo-treated metallic parts, etc. With Porsche building enthusiast cars, you need to be an enthusiast to comfortably own one. Basically, a lot of money to maintain, brake pads wear very fast, tires, etc.
From a driver's point of view, my only pick would be the X5. All three engines, straight six to both V8's are awesome to drive and have plenty of power. I've always praised BMW vehicles as they're so intuitive and always do what you want. Comfort is great and climate control on the X5 is amazing. I plan to pick one up next year as my daily driver.

The Range Rover, although nice to look at, has the worst reliability of these manufacturers so I would advise to avoid that brand. Land Rover ranked 43rd out of 44 in a long term reliability survey. The BMW is a nice driver but has very limited practicality as its focus is on sport- rougher ride, less off-road/snow/ice capabilities etc. Its cargo area is the smallest by far and has the least interior space of any of these models. Additionally, BMW has had numerous problems with their electrical components and is not the most reliable. Extrapolating data from the consumer database, many customers complain about reliability issues relating to the engine and electronic components and poor MPG- 13.4 was the reported average over 40k miles. It ranked 19th out of 44 in a long term reliability survey. The Porsche is also very nice to drive but like the BMW offers limited utility. After haven driven the Cayenne base model, I would say I like the feel of the materials but the layout is boring and unintuitive. The engine, a 3.6l V6 was very weak and unperforming. The S model is better but averages a poor 14.6 MPG according to the consumer database. The Mercedes ML is very practical but the design is old and outdated. Although this is personal opinion, the negatives in the MB are, poor MPG (14.7 city/highway average)and poor reliability, mostly electical in nature. Also, maintenance is very expensive- an oil change will run $140. Parts are liekwise very expensive. Dollar for dollar non of these offers a great value- they are expensive to own and operate and depreciate quickly. There are many other excellent brands and models that I would highly recommend. For instance: Buick Enclave Cadillac Escalade Cadillac SRX Lexus LX570 Toyota Land Cruiser Acura MDX All of these model rank higher in overall quality and offer better values and long term satisfaction. Additionally, Cadillac placed #2 right behind Lexus in a long term quality survey. Good Luck

i went with the Range Rover Sport. it's tops in offroad performance and best in style, both interior and exterior IMHO. nav by denso (same folks who do Lexus).
i've heard the BMW rates highly in engine and freeway/high speed performance and Porsche in pure top speed. MB is way to common a vehicle. nav sucks in the BMW. can't speak too much to the technology goodies in the cars, but the RRS is great.

all of these are incredible gas guzzlers, but if you had too... I'd go with the X5. b/c it is luxury, handles well, and is overall a very good SUV
